Learning to drive is about more than passing the test. These safe driving habits are worth practising from your very first lesson, so that they become second nature on every journey.
- Keep a safe distance. Leave a safe gap from the vehicle in front and avoid tailgating.
- Watch your speed. Keep to the speed limit and adjust your speed for the weather and road conditions.
- Signal in good time. Signal before changing lane or turning, and check your mirrors and blind spots first.
- Wear your seat belt. Make sure your passengers wear theirs too.
- Avoid distractions. Do not use your phone, eat or drink while driving.
- Never drive under the influence. Do not drive after alcohol or drugs, and avoid driving when you are tired.
- Drive defensively. Stay alert, plan ahead and be courteous to other road users.
- Know the Highway Code. Learn the rules and road signs, and follow them.
You can practise these habits during your lessons as you build towards a safe, confident, independent driving style. You may also like our guides on what to expect from your first lesson and how to prepare for your practical test.
